Kayak expedition in Upernavik, 13 days (4018)

In the Greenlandic wilderness, far in the north, 600 km north of the polar circle is the small village of Upernavik. The area is perfect for kayaking. There is a bay with over one hundred islands and the weather is stabile with little wind or waves. Ten small communities are spread out over the area and the large and active Upernavik Icefjord. Travel with us to this magnificent area on a true arctic adventure where we will explore an area that few have been to before us!

Please note that you need to be an experinced paddler to participate on this tour. The guide language on this tour is English. The tour will be adapted to weather and wind and the itinerary is just the plan and for sure it will be changes, There is 24 hours daylight so there are time for for both paddling and hiking. 

This trip is postponed to 2025. If you are intrested in participating please let us know and we will send you information when the new date is decided.

Dagsprogram

  • Day 1: Departure

    Flight in the morning from Copenhagen, via Kangerlussuaq, Ilulissat to Upernavik. After arrival, preparing the trip. Welcome dinner.-
    First night will be in a hostel.

  • Day 2 - 9: Paddling expedition

    The kayaking will start in Upernavik travelling towards the village Aapilattoq that are situated beautiful at the icefjord. We then cross the icefjord and explore that area. We will visit small settlements before returning back to Upernavik. We might get to Kingigtorssuaq where the northernmost rune stone was found, proving the Vikings went this far north. The kayaking will be adapted, as usual, according to wind and weather and you will, of course, be involved in the planning of the expedition.

  • Day 10: Back to Upernavik

    Back to Upernavik and the last night is planned to be in a hostel

  • Day 11-12: Ilulissat

    Flight to Ilulissat and two nights in this fanastic town, that is the third biggest in Greenland with approx 5000 inhabitants. There are many different options for activities, hiking, paddling or just enjoyng Greenlandic town life.

  • Day 13: Returning to Copenhagen

    Flight from Ilulissat, via Kangerlussuaq to Copenhagen.

The guide

With us on the expedition is our local kayaking guide and instructor Søren Nikolaj Sørensen. Nikolaj was born in Odense, Denmark 1977 and have studied biology for many years. Shortly after finishing his degree he moved to Ilulissat and started working in its Hospital. Four months later he was employed as a bio-analytic by the department of Health in Upernavik. Nikolaj will have been living here since 2005 and has contacts in all the area. Nikolaj is a trained kayaking instructor and has, since 2008, been guiding kayaking-tourists and dog-sledge enthusiasts throughout the Upernavik area.
